Crosby vs. Letterman

So we all know Crosby one gold for Team Canada in the Olympics, so the Dave Letterman show extended an invitation for Crosby to make an appearance and boast about his winnings. In my opinion I’m super happy that he didn’t attend and declined the invite. The reason it makes me happy is because hockey is Canada’s game and the last thing Crosby wants after lots of media coverage at the Olympics is a smart ass Letterman pocking fun at Canada and what matters most to Canadians. In my opinion sport stars that jump at fame should be shunned. I love that Crosby is a humble, shy guy. Its speaks a lot about our country and our humility.

The Loonie Soar’s to Latest High

The Canadian Loonie has reached its latest high, climbing to 97.46 cents US. Currency strategists say their predictions are that the Loonie will once again surpass the American dollar by midyear 2010. However the higher the Loonie climbs the harder it makes it on the Canadian manufacturing and exporters industry. This industry was hit very hard by the recession because of the US trying to boost their economy by buying home goods and not continuing as much trade with Canada. But now that the Loonie climbs sales have declined since the rising cost of their goods alongside the Loonie.

Canadian Anthem Changed?

O Canada, the song that brings Canadians to their feet, tears to their eyes and pride to a country of patriots. So why would we ever want to change that? The conservative government has raised the question that it may need re-examining and possibly a change. Politicians have been proposing a rewording of the anthem's third line, "in all thy sons command", since the 1990's, but every proposal has been shot down as political correctness run amok. The reason that government officials have reopened this very sensitive topic is due to the Winter Olympics that has just recently passed. Watching the great women of our nation standing on the podium singing our anthem raised the concern that our anthem needs to be more gender sensitive. In my thoughts on this whole issue, I feel that everything in this world needs updating and I do agree with the thought of modernizing our country to fit today’s world. But at the same time our anthem lays tribute to the soldiers of the past that gave their lives to protect this country. There are now female soldiers in the Canadian Armed Forces and have been for awhile but I like the way the right-wing women's organization said it in a 2003 news release "REAL Women requests the Liberal government in Ottawa to address the real problems Canadians face, especially economic ones, instead of dancing to the tune of a handful of chronically dissatisfied feminists". That should be the case for every true blooded Canadian. Instead of talking about the anthem and distracting ourselves with petty little gender sensitive issues we should be worrying about the 56 billion dollar deficit that our country is holding or how the unemployment rate is hurting Canadian family’s across the country.

Trade Deadline 2010: Toronto Maple Leafs

Who’s ready for some hockey talk, I know I am? Today was the NHL trade deadline where all the teams lay down their cards, the cards they’ve coveted so close to their chests all season. The Toronto Maple Leafs did make a splash today but it wasn’t like the block buster trade that took place just three weeks ago. Today was more tweaking the team and dumping some salary. Toronto sent Alexei Ponikarosky to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In return they received prospect Luca Caputi and 30 year old defenseman Martin Skoula. In this deal Pittsburgh picked up a reliable goal scoring forward that has size and ability. Toronto received a sawed after prospect that will be a building block for the future and a defenseman that they have flipped into a 5^th round draft pick in 2010 summer from the New Jersey Devils. Many Leaf fans will be sad to see “Poni” go since he has been with the franchise for so long. Yet if Burke is to truly rebuild this team to model his image then Poni was a piece that he had to receive return on. Poni is a free agent at the end of this season so if Burke is not interested in resigning him them now is the time to move him. As a Leaf fan I wish Alexei good luck in Pittsburgh and hope that he can contribute to the Penguins making a run to the Stanley Cup.

Earth Spinning Faster, Days Become Shorter:

So earthquakes have been striking the glob at an alarming rate. First major quake hit Haiti only one month ago and now another huge quake has hit Chile pushing earth’s mass closer to its axis, speeding up the earth’s rotation. Scientists say that there is nothing to worry about and that we won’t be affected by the change because it is only fractions of a millisecond difference, on millionth of a second to be exact. It is so small that scientists would not even be able to measure it with their instruments. But all the same it is somewhat nerve racking to think how easy our way of life could come crash down around us.

Men’s Hockey Olympic Gold:

So the Olympics have come and gone. Now I know that I am not one to talk well on the Olympics because I do question a lot of its purpose. But I got to say as a Canadian, “ha ha ha team USA”, wow that feels good doesn’t it. Now just in case you are not Canadian or you somehow you missed Sunday night’s Gold medal game between Canada and the United States, Canada won gold with an overtime goal by “Syd the Kid Crosby” making the score 3-2. And of course it just had to be Crosby eh? Can you believe it? The kid is only twenty two years old and already he is the youngest Capitan to ever put on the “C” at the NHL level. He’s been to the Stanley Cup twice, the second time getting redemption against the Detroit Red Wings from Pittsburgh’s loss the season before. Now Crosby scores the biggest goal in maybe Canadian history in the final game of the Olympics. Against a team that played a far more complete game and had already set the tone of the tournament with their undefeated record. I salute you Mr. Crosby! For you are a King living on top of the world.

Playing Cupid

So I have a friend that has just gotten out of a long distance relationship. He’s a tall good looking guy that has a sensitive side and is very respectful to women. For me personally I feel that after a long relationship it is important not to dwell over what went wrong and to have good friends that will take you out and show you some fun so that you can remember how much fun it can be to be single. So right now I’m sure you’ve noticed if you have read my other blogs that I have currently started a relationship with a girl that I am head over heels about. So instead of being the wing man that I am ever so good at, I’ve promised my buddy that I’ll play the Cupid and try to hook him up with a girl that is a friend. That’s the right thing to do isn’t it? Well I’ve been looking around and I think I’ve found a good first date for him. It’s a girl in my class that says she will come out for a date and the reason it’s so perfect is because me and the girl are good friends in class so if they double with me and my girlfriend then we’ll have lots to talk about and there won’t be any awkward moments. Boy oh boy I’m good I should get a crown.

Fate? Destiny? Coincidence?

Fate, destiny, coincidence, have you ever felt these ways? Or maybe a better question would be to ask what are these terms and do they exist? In the Webster’s Dictionary they define fate as being “the will or principle or determining cause by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events to happen as they do : destiny”. Well I don’t know anything about that but I can tell you a story that has recently happened to me that made me feel this way. It was February 6, just two weeks ago and I was invited to attend my friend’s birthday party. The night started at a dinner party with some cocktails and snacks. We played some music socialized and watched a hockey game. The plan was to go out to a bar afterward and then to a keg party as a surprise for the birthday boy. During that day I kind of had the flu and decided that I would go to the dinner party but head home afterwards. At around eleven o-clock the party started to call the cabs and I had a decision to make, either ignore my cold and keep the party going or head home. Well this story wouldn’t have turned out as well as it did if I had headed home. I decided to go and was pleasantly surprised to have met the girl of my dreams during the keg party. I’ll keep her name private but if you know me and talk to me then you probably have heard quite a bit about her already. But it’s funny you know, I just keep thinking about if I hadn’t gone, would we have ever met? Because as soon as I met her I knew, you know that feeling, like it was meant to be? Well it was over whelming to say the least. But it brings me back to that question, what if I didn’t go? We don’t have any of the same friends; we don’t go to the same school, hang out in the same places or even live somewhat close to each other. So what if I didn’t go? Would we have met some other way? I swear, I feel like she’s my soul mate and I just met her. So I feel like fate or destiny played its part and connected us. I’m sure that you’ve felt something like this at one point in your life. And this teaches me one thing, we make our foot steps in life but the path that we choose has been determined for us.

My Olympic thoughts

How much is a gold medal worth? Is it worth us letting people go hungry? Is it worth sacrificing proper infrastructure or how about a child’s education? The reason I ask these questions is because although I am a proud Canadian, I do realize that the billions of dollars spent on the Olympics could be used to inject our social systems with the money needed to compete with the rest of the world in what matters most. How would you feel if we could have the lowest poverty rate in the world or how about the best health care system? Did you know that right now over 750,000 Canadians are using food banks and over 250,000 of them are children? This number has spiked to its highest rate ever in the past year. Although I feel somewhat hypocritical because it would be hard to pull me away from the television during the Canadian men’s hockey games. But I’ll tell you one thing, friends, we need to make a change! Instead of rewarding our elitist athletes to go the faster and play the harder, we should be rewarding our citizen with top of the line education, health care systems, infrastructure and transit. The answer is not to raise taxes to boost these systems. Our taxes are already too high, leaving little extra in the average pocket. We need to figure out ways to cut spending on any nonessential activities. In my opinion the Olympics would be one of the first. Canada lets stand together and create a better tomorrow for our children!
